The Rancher Next Door

Have you ever fallen in love with your next-door neighbor?

Jenny is struggling to raise her twin siblings, alone. Orphaned, the small family moves into a cabin inherited from Jenny’s relative. At first, their new home appears a mess, but, Jenny is optimistic about fixing up their new abode and finding a job. However, her mood is altered whenever Mitch, the rancher next door, is around. This tall, good-looking man becomes a father figure for her siblings.

But, Jenny’s been hurt before, and Mitch has had his share of pain, too. Can both of them learn to love again?

I enjoyed this novel. I especially liked Jenny’s courage – taking care of two teenagers, alone, is a lot for a young woman to do. I also liked how she was determined to make a home out of their small cabin. Overall, a very nice read.

So, have you ever fallen in love, or had a romantic relationship with somebody who lives next door (or near your house)? What happened between the two of you?

A Love Discovered

Ben practically feels like a failure. Due to his massive gambling debt, he’s had to relocate to his parents’ farm and work in the family business.

This was not the way he wanted to live his life. He was supposed to be in a good job, using his engineering degree.

But, beautiful Maggie moves in next door. She keeps popping into his mind, but, he’s not ready for a relationship. After all, his life is still in shambles as he tries to resist his gambling addiction.

Maggie is dealing with problems of her own. She’s attracted to Ben, but, her elderly aunt warns her that Ben is bad news.

If he’s so bad, then, why is she so attracted to him, why does she think about him so much? Maggie’s husband died in Afghanistan four years ago, and she’s a single mother, raising her young son alone. She’s moved in with her aunt to help out, try to save the family consignment business.

I thought this was a sweet, heartwarming story that teaches us about faith. Ben leans on God to help battle his addiction and Maggie leans upon the Lord as she struggles with financial woes, and tries to save the family business. Overall, this was a good read.

Have you ever suffered from a broken engagement?

This book was so cute and sweet! Mandy is a food critic, and she meets handsome Leo when she reviews his restaurant for her column. Leo is enamored with Mandy – but, he’s still suffering from the pain of a broken engagement. Plus, his father is ill and now Leo has agreed to run both of his father’s restaurants. Can he do all of this and still have a relationship with Mandy?

I loved this book – one main reason was the food! Lobster, torte, tiramisu, lasagna, Chinese food…breakfast food…the author did an awesome job with her food descriptions. The story was a nice, sweet Christian romance. This is a nice, quick, sweet, enjoyable story.

So, have you ever suffered from a broken engagement? How did you deal with your pain?

Have you ever been swindled by an ex-boyfriend/ex-girlfriend or former-husband/former- wife?

Alice Dempsey is struggling to survive after her husband gambles away their family farm. Her husband was killed while cheating at a card game, and, he’s left their family in dire straits. Alice must work to provide food and shelter for her crippled grandfather, her toddler son, and her juvenile-delinquent brother, Burl.

When she loses her seamstress job, Ian Macgregor, an older man who owns a pharmacy, offers to give her a job. Alice refuses – she can never trust another man since her deceased husband manipulated her so badly. Since she refuses Ian’s kindness, how can she provide food for her hungry family? Her independence proves strong, almost too strong, when it interferes with her ability to support her loved ones. When Burl gets into trouble with the law, Alice finds it even harder to survive each day.

Ian Macgregor has had a secret crush on Alice for a while. He speaks to her each day as she goes rushing to her seamstress job. However, like Alice, Ian has been hurt in the past by his former love interest.

I thought this book was good. The characters were rich and very well-developed. Alice is a caring, stubborn, Christian woman who is extremely determined to care for her family by herself.

Have you ever been swindled by a husband/wife, or former boyfriend/girlfriend? If so, what happened? Was it hard to forgive him/her for their transgressions?

If a man proposed to you, and did not mention the word LOVE in the proposal, what would you do? Would you accept his proposal?

Nessa and Isaac have known each other since they were children. Now that they are adults, both of their families automatically assume they’ll be getting married. Isaac proposes to Nessa, but, surprisingly, she turns down his proposal, refusing to tell him the reason. Isaac is stumped – after all, isn’t he supposed to marry Nessa?

Nessa loves Isaac, however, when he proposed, he did not mention his love for her. Why should she marry him if he’s only marrying her out of duty instead of love?

When Lawrence and Clementine, an urban brother and sister come to town, Nessa realizes she’ll have some competition for Isaac’s affection. Fashionable, petite, bothersome, Clementine sticks to Isaac like glue, and Lawrence finds himself smitten with Nessa.

I thought this was a light, enjoyable read, but the conflict was not very deep. I enjoyed reading about Yellowstone, and I enjoyed the wonderful characters, however, I felt that Isaac and Nessa could’ve worked out their differences earlier in the book if Nessa had simply told him why she didn’t accept his proposal.

I’d recommend this book as a light, sometimes funny, and gentle story with real, likeable (and sometimes unlikeable) characters!

So, if a man proposed to you, and did not mention the word LOVE in the proposal, what would you do? Would you accept the proposal?

With Eyes Of Love by Linda S. Glaz

With Eyes of Love by Linda S. Glaz

What would you do if you returned from the war, disfigured? How would you handle it?

When Barbara and her family are stranded their car at Christmas, endangered, because of a flood, they’re rescued by the Judges, a sympathetic family who takes them in for shelter. When Jackson Judge, a son in their family of rescuers, winks at Barbara, she’s slightly offended yet attracted to handsome Jackson. However, Barbara is engaged to Elliott so it’s not possible for her to act upon her feelings for Jackson.

Barbara returns to the Judges home about two years later, keeping in contact via letters with Betty Judge, Jackson’s sister. She’s become best friends with Betty and she’s returning to be maid of honor in Betty’s weddings. She wonders what’s become of Jackson since Betty seldom mentions her brother in her letters.

However, when Barbara sees Jackson, she realizes he’s suffered a lot of pain and anguish, both physical and mental. Fighting in World War II, amidst Pearl Harbor, he’s been injured. Jackson doesn’t feel he’d be a viable mate to anybody in his current physical and mental state of mind.

I enjoyed this story. Usually in romance novels, both hero and heroine look PERFECT and flawless. Reading a book where one of the characters is not physically attractive on the outside was a refreshing change from the regular romance novel. Overall, this was a good, intriguing read.

So, what would you do if you returned from the war physically disfigured? How would you cope?

It’s just so sad that Heartsong Presents no longer exists! 🙁

The End Of Heartsong Presents

It was officially announced yesterday that as of the end of 2011, the Heartsong Presents book club will no longer be in existance. The book club is being cancelled and I was so stunned to hear this. HP has been around since 1992 – that’s almost twenty years of books and they’ve released over 1,000 titles! A lot of big-name Christian fiction authors got their start by writing for Heartsong Presents.

Well, with the world of publishing making drastic changes lately, I can’t say that I’m surprised. I did notice that when I received reader mail about my Heartsongs, the correspondence was always from an elderly person. I’m led to believe that the Heartsong demographic was older people and perhaps many of the members joined in the beginning and as time went on, it was hard to get more people to join the book club in recent years? It’s hard to say.

I was a member of this book club for several years. I’m still wrapping my mind around this stunning news! 🙁

Any comments about this? Why do you think this happened?
