What Happened to Harlequin Romance?

Do you read Harlequin romance novels?

I thought this article was interesting. Granted it’s three years old, but, we’ve been talking about this subject in writers’ circles over the last five years, give or take. I only had one book out with Harlequin, and am open to submitting to them again, time permitting. I like having my book on a store shelf (including Walmart, Kmart, grocery stores, etc.). But, indie books have really been taking off!

Authors are publishing their own works and are actually making good money doing that. From my experience, and from speaking to other authors, most of the money from indie-published e-books comes from Amazon (mostly their Kindle Unlimited program).

So, do you read Harlequin romance novels? If so, which lines do you read? Do you purchase them in the store or as an e-book?

Hi Cecilia! I actually read Harlequin books now more than ever. I read Love Inspired, Love Inspired Suspense, and Harlequin Intrigue, mostly. I always buy them as ebooks now, unless I pick some random print copies up at library book sales. But every month, I order some on Amazon and download to my Kindle. I do love that the indie publishing model has taken off because I think that’s great for authors. I’m definitely open to reading those if one is recommended to me, or if I’m already familiar with an author. But what Harlequin offers me is a known entity – I like knowing that the content is wholesome (Love Inspired lines) and that the ending will be happy, no gruesome content, etc. In today’s day and age, I find many things very painful to read about, and reading is escapism to me. I want it to be a joyfull experience, not stressful. 😉

Hi, Tiffany! Thx so much for commenting! I read some Harlequin, but not many. If I read them, it’s usually Love Inspired. Did you hear that they’re canceling the Love Inspired Historical line? Harlequin is also canceling a few other lines, too, like Kimani (their African-American imprint).

Indie recommendations? Try Sweet Dreams! Only $2.99 on Amazon! If you enjoy Love Inspired then you’ll love Sweet Dreams! myBook.to/SweetDreams2

Just had to throw in that shameless promotion!

Yes, in this day and age, reading is all about escapism (for lots of folks). Have you ever read Debbie Macomber? Her books are usually gentle, sweet, feel-good books.

Cecelia, oh wow, no, I didn’t know that! I don’t read a lot of historical, though I DO like them, I should read them more often! That’s a shame about Kimani. :-\ The Sweet Dreams recommendation is CLUTCH, I’m on it girl!
