Unicorns In The Bible?

Do you believe UNICORNS, the one-horned mythical creatures, really existed?

The word UNICORN was mentioned in the Old King James Version of the Bible. I’ve listed the scriptures at the end of this blog post. From my research, the word that was translated into UNICORN was re’em (the Hebrew word). Re’em means aurochs, which is the ancestor of domestic cattle.

It appears that the word was mistranslated in the Old King James Version. Other versions of the Bible use the word wild ox instead of unicorn.

What do you think? Is it possible that unicorns really existed after all? Do you think these wild, mythical creatures really roved on this earth?

Sunday Brunch! Have You Ever Seen An Angel?

***Have you ever seen an angel?

Luke 1:18-20

New King James Version (NKJV)

18 And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

19 And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. 20 But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”

Have you ever seen an angel? If you were to ever see an angel, would you believe your eyes? Would you listen? Would you think that you were dreaming?

The angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias, telling him that his prayers had been answered and that his barren wife, Elizabeth, would give birth to a great son, John The Baptist. Zacharias did not initially believe Gabriel’s words, so, he was struck mute until shortly after the birth of his son.

Zacharias learned his lesson on the day he saw Gabriel in the temple – always believe an angel’s words.

How would you react if you were to see an angel? Have you ever seen an angel? Would you believe the angel’s message?

I’ve never seen an angel, but, I’ve often imagined what it would be like to see one of these heavenly creatures. From what I can recall from reading my Bible, angels are usually big, wingless, male-looking beings. Can you imagine, being alone in a room and then you see an angel? Honestly? I think I’d have a heart attack, or, think that I’m dreaming!

Please share your thoughts on this amazing subject!

Sunday Brunch! Behemoth!

http://ceceliadowdy.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/waffles.jpg

Could you imagine seeing a behemoth – a creature whose bones are like tubes of bronze?

When I read Job 40:15-24 (see the entire verse at the end of this post), I’m amazed…amazed just knowing that God created an animal so huge, vast, just thinking about it makes me fearful. When God mentioned the behemoth (and the leviathan) in the book of Job, He did so to explain His greatness to Job. Job realized that God was so vivid and vast that He could not possibly understand His greatness.

I wonder what it would’ve been like to actually see a behemoth? I’d imagine the behemoth and the leviathan existed during the dinosaur age? Wouldn’t it be weird if we could actually see these creatures today? What would it be like to be in a remote, uncharted woods and then you see this massive creature roaming around? I’d be scared, and then, I’d run as fast as I could, praying for the Lord to protect me!

When I read about these creatures, they seem unreal, almost mythical. Just seeing the descriptions of these animals makes me stop, think, and be reminded about God’s greatness. I think reading about these creatures makes me stop and imagine what they’re like, because they are creatures that we no longer see on this earth – at least I’ve never seen them!

I wonder what would happen if such a creature were found today? Could you imagine what it would be like to see it?

Job 40: 15-24

15 “Look at Behemoth,
which I made along with you
and which feeds on grass like an ox.
16 What strength it has in its loins,
what power in the muscles of its belly!
17 Its tail sways like a cedar;
the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.
18 Its bones are tubes of bronze,
its limbs like rods of iron.
19 It ranks first among the works of God,
yet its Maker can approach it with his sword.
20 The hills bring it their produce,
and all the wild animals play nearby.
21 Under the lotus plants it lies,
hidden among the reeds in the marsh.
22 The lotuses conceal it in their shadow;
the poplars by the stream surround it.
23 A raging river does not alarm it;
it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth.
24 Can anyone capture it by the eyes,
or trap it and pierce its nose?

Sunday Brunch – Leviathan! – From The Blog Archives

Note: This is a repeat from an old blog post.

Thanks so much to Charity, a respondant from this blog post, for sharing this scripture with me. Although I recall reading the book of Job, somehow, I forgot about the Leviathan chapter. Also, the Leviathan is mentioned in the following scriptures, too:
Psalm 74
Isaiah 27:1
Job 41

Job 41 – I’m only emphasizing a few verses. You should read the entire chapter!
1 “Can you draw out Leviathan[a] with a hook,
Or snare his tongue with a line which you lower?
….
… 14 Who can open the doors of his face,
With his terrible teeth all around?
… 18 His sneezings flash forth light,
And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19 Out of his mouth go burning lights;
Sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke goes out of his nostrils,
As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
21 His breath kindles coals,
And a flame goes out of his mouth.

It sounds like he’s a large, scaly, frightful dragon-like sea creature. My question is, did this creature really exist or is he just mentioned for symbolic reasons? Charity mentioned that this creature sounds like a dinosaur, and I have to agree with her.

The leviathan sounds more like a dinosaur than the nephilim, which another blog reader speculated about, stating that she thought nephilim were dinosaurs, but I’ve already stated that I totally disagree with that line of thought.

So, blog readers, what do you think? Did this fire/smoke breathing dragon-like sea creature really exist in the deep dark depths of the ocean?

Sunday Brunch – Cherubim!

Mock Brunch Menu:
Creamy vanilla rice pudding with raisins and sprinkled with cinnamon
Fluffy blueberry pancakes slathered with real butter and homemade maple syrup
Crispy salty bacon
Tender link sausages
Hot coffee laced with cream and sugar
Cold, fresh-squeezed orange juice
Sweet apple juice

As usual, let’s pretend like we’ve just finished the tasty meal that I’ve outlined above and we’re ready to talk about some scriptures!

Today, I wanted to talk about the cherubim. For some reason, thoughts of the cherubim have been going through my mind over the last few weeks! I’ll talk about seraphim another week.

NOTE: I’M TALKING ABOUT CHERUBIM IN THE BIBLICAL SENSE. I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE TERM CHERUB/CHERUBIM AS IT PERTAINS TO INFANTS/BABIES.

When you think about cherubim, what image comes to your mind?

The cherubim are mentioned in the Bible a number of times. After Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden, the cherubim guarded the Garden so that Adam and Eve could not return:

Genesis 3:24
24After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Cherubim were also used numerous times in the design of the Ark of the Covenant as well as the temple built by Solomon. This leads me to believe that these are extremely holy and important creatures.

We also know that God is enthroned between the cherubim:
2 Kings 19:15
15And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.

However, the Biblical image that I find most striking about the cherubim occurs in Ezekiel 10:12-14
12Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands and their wings, were completely full of eyes, as were their four wheels. 13I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.” 14Each of the cherubim had four faces: One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

When I think of these Biblical creatures, I think about how amazing they are, and how scary they must look! God sits between these winged creatures and they appear to be of some importance in the Old Testament. I wonder what it would’ve been like to see these creatures? Just reading about them brings images to my mind, images that are really hard to grasp.

What do you think about when you read the scriptures about the cherubim?

As always, comments and questions are appreciated!

Moments With Angels By Robert Strand

I found this book lying around my messy house. I’m off from work next week and I have a little more time to read. I believe somebody gave this to me as a gift awhile ago. I enjoy reading “true” stories about angels. These short vignettes were very entertaining, however, as I read them, I wondered if all of the stories were really “true” or if they were merely urban legends? Now, don’t start throwing stones at me because I’m just saying how I feel! I do believe in angels, I know that we’re not supposed to worship them, we’re only supposed to worship the Lord Jesus. But, I did wonder about the stories. I noticed that some of the stories did have references with a first and last name. One story even referenced a Christian radio station. I emailed this Christian radio station to see if this story was really true, or, if it was just a legend. I didn’t see the story listed on the radio station’s website, and I’m not sure if they’ll respond.

I recommend this book if you want a good, quick, entertaining, thought-provoking read about the power of God’s messengers. I briefly blogged about angels here, back in 2008.

Have you ever had an encounter with an angel? If so, what happened? What made you believe that this being was an angel?

Dinosaurs In The Bible?

Sharon recently posted the following comment on this blog post about the Nephilim (these big people are still crossing my mind):

Hi Cecelia, I am so glad you posted this question. I have been wondering about the Nephilim myself. My pastor just jumps over it and says he doesn’t know.

But we do know for a fact that dinosaurs lived on the earth. They are not mentioned as dinosaurs in Genesis, but it is possible that the Nephilim were dinosaurs. I can imagine ancient people finding these huge bones and thinking they were giant people or even thinking they were
“gods from Mount Olympus”, thus providing the ideas that started Greek mythology.

Whether or not they were dinosaurs, it does make sense that they were not big enough for Noah’s Ark. Getting rid of giants would be a big favor to mankind, and God could have choosen the flood to get rid of these creatures.

My response?
I highly doubt that the Nephilim were dinosaurs. Why? Because if you read my post for the following day, you’ll see that I did some further research and that these giant people (Nephilim/Raphaites/etc. – they were known by various names) were actually very tall people. The giants/Nephilim pop up again later on in scripture and one of them was the last in a line of kings and the Bible describes the bed this giant slept on – I doubt a dinosaur would be crowned king. I have heard the alien theory (I believe somebody else commented about that on this post or on the next one). Also, I heard an author speak a long time ago. His name was Pat (can’t recall his last name), but he mentioned the Greek god theory during his speech, and I thought he sounded a bit ludicrous!

If anybody knows anything else about the Nephilim, feel free to post!

Rocky Road Dreams is available on Amazon.com as an e-book. The book can be read via the Kindle app – which can be downloaded onto most Smart Phones.

Now, let’s talk about those large clusters of grapes!

Numbers 13:23-25
23 Then they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs. 24 The place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the men of Israel cut down there. 25 And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.

If you read my blog post last Wednesday, you’ll see that I was talking about the Giants/Nephilim in the Bible. A few verses before the verse that I quoted in Numbers, you’ll see that the spies that Moses sent out were to bring him samples of the food that was growing in the land of Canaan (also known as the land of milk and honey). They went to Hebron and cut down one cluster of grapes and two men had to carry this one cluster on a pole between them! Can you imagine how huge those grapes were? Plus, this is where the Giants were living, too. I’ll bet those grapes were as big or bigger than the apples that we eat today!

I did some more research about the Giant people that appear in the Old Testament. The Nephilim mentioned in Genesis were killed in the big flood that God caused to wipe out every living thing on the earth with the exception of the inhabitants of Noah’s Ark.

The people that Moses’s spies saw when gathering the grapes, the Giants/Nephilim, were descendants of a man named Anak. Anak was a Raphaite. The Anakites or Rephaim were Giants that are mentioned in the Old Testament several times. It appears that they finally died off because there is a scripture Deuteronomy 3:11 which states:
11 (Only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaites. His bed was made of iron and was more than thirteen feet long and six feet wide.

As I think about it further, and as I mentioned yesterday, I’m assuming the Fallen Angels appeared again sometime after the flood and infiltrated the bloodline of Anak somehow?

If you are interested, here are all of the scripture references of the Anakites, Nephilim, and Raphaim. Look them up if you want:
Genesis 6:1-4
Genesis 14:5
Genesis 15:20
Numbers 13
Numbers 13:33
Deuteronomy 2:11
Deuteronomy 2:10-11,20
Deuteronomy 2:18-21
Deuteronomy 3:11,13
Joshua 12:4
Joshua 13:12
Joshua 15:8
Joshua 15:13
Joshua 17:15
Joshua 18:16
2 Samuel 5:11,22

2 Samuel 21:20–21
2 Samuel 23:13
1 Chronicles 11:15
1 Chronicles 14:9
1 Chronicles 20:4

Most of the scriptures just give these giant people a brief mention. I’m assuming all were evil people like the Nephilim mentioned in Genesis, especially since Moses’s spies were told to get rid of the different people living in the land of Canaan, which included these Giants! I got most of this research from Wikipedia, so, use at your own risk! I did look up all of the scriptures but this is NOT a subject matter in which I’m an expert! If I have any facts that are wrong, then feel free to correct me! I’m willing to learn!

It’s possible that the grapes were the same size as the ones that we see today, but the clusters were bigger – so big that 2 people had to carry them!

What do you think about all of this? Can you imagine living in a land with these gigantic people with gigantic clusters of grapes? Almost makes me feel like I’m not on this earth when I read about it because the concept is so foreign. I’ll bet God’s earth looked a LOT different back in those days! Leave a comment!
