Sunday Brunch – Did Philip Disappear?

From my blog archives…

Question:
What happened to Philip at the end of the eighth chapter in the book of Acts?

I wanted to talk about the ending of the scripture involving the Ethiopian eunuch. After Philip has a life-changing conversation with the eunuch, Philip baptizes him. After the baptism, the following occurs:
Acts 8:39-40
39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

What I’m wondering is, did the Lord’s Holy Spirit enable Philip to disappear and then re-appear in Azotus? I know some translations use the term “carried” Philip away instead of “took Philip away.” Either way you look at it, it appears to me that Philip literally disappeared from the scene of the eunuch and then reappeared in Azotus. I’m thinking Azotus was where the Lord felt was the greatest need for Philip to preach the gospel. So, that’s why He had to carry Philip away from the eunuch so suddenly – Philip had lots of preaching work to do.

Do you think that Philip literally disappeared and then re-appeared? If so, why?

Do you think it’s wrong for Christians to wear tattoos?

I came up with the subject for today’s Sunday Brunch while I was out on Friday evening. I passed a tattoo shop and this scripture came to my mind:

Leviticus 19:28 28“ ‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.

This scripture is taken from the Old Testament, and far as I know, the New Testament does not mention this rule. I’ve seen some cool tattoos on folks, but, I’ve never been of the mind-set to get one. The thought of being pricked by that painful needle…and making that permanent mark on my skin has never appealed to me. Plus, as you get older, the tattoos don’t look as fresh and vibrant, they fade. I definitely wouldn’t want my skin crowded with faded tattoos!

However, I honestly don’t think that getting a tattoo is necessarily “wrong”. I tend to think more of daily-life Christian laws as being taken from the New Testament, moreso than the Old Testament. However, people may disagree with me about tattoos and I’d like to get a discussion going about this subject. I know I was raised to believe that tattoos were wrong and this scripture was used to back up that “rule.” However, as I got older and more exposed to the world, my thinking has changed.

Although I don’t think getting a tattoo is wrong, it’s not something that I would encourage someone to do. Why? Well, like I’ve already said, the idea has just never appealed to me, and if my son were older (like a teenager) and wanted my permission to get a tattoo, I’d tell him NO!

So, do you think it’s wrong for Christians to get tattoos? Leave your response in the comments!

Sunday Brunch – Preaching The Gospel In Public School!

Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Do you remember when the Gospel was preached in public schools?

Reading this scripture had me thinking about my childhood. When I was in the fifth grade (many, many decades ago!) the Gideons Bible group sent permission slips home to our parents, asking if they could give each student a new Bible when they came to visit the school. I recall my mother telling me that I didn’t really need a new Bible since we were Jehovah’s Witnesses and we already had our own Bible (The New World Translation).

Anyway, I recall one of my Bible-receiving classmates taunting a non-Bible-receiving classmate – asking why he refused the new Bible. The Bible-receiving classmate had said, “Why didn’t you get a Bible? Do you love the devil?”

The non-Bible-receiving classmate mumbled that he already had a Bible. I also recall that the teachers had separated us non-Bible receivers into another room while the rest of the students were gifted with their Bibles. We returned to the classrooms later, amidst students flipping through scriptures, enjoying their new gifts. The teachers had received the full Bible, both Old and New Testaments, the students received a smaller Bible containing just the New Testament.

Anyway, my whole point to this blog post is that times have changed. I can’t imagine the Gideons visiting a public school nowadays, gifting each student with a new Bible. I’d imagine it would make the school explode with shock, as well as some possible lawsuits, if such an event happened today?

Do you remember a time when Christianity and faith were discussed in public schools? Do you remember when the Gospel was shared in the classroom? Please share your thoughts…

Sunday Brunch – Would You Follow Jesus?

Jesus healed the sick, he made the blind see and he made the lame walk. Let’s pretend that you were born during Biblical times, if you were alive back then, and you witnessed Jesus doing his miracles, would you believe? Would you accept Him as your Savior?

I’ll be honest, if  I were living during Biblical times, I’m not sure if I would believe if people told me about Jesus. I could imagine myself being skeptical, thinking that people were exaggerating about Jesus’s healings. However, seeing is believing. If I actually saw somebody being healed, I would believe. I could also imagine myself believing if I encountered the blind man (or somebody like this) described in John 9 (quoted below). If I’d seen this man, blind since birth, before his healing, and then encountered him after he’d been healed…well, I’d be stunned, shocked, and then I’d fall on my knees, praising my Savior!

So, if you were alive while Jesus walked on this earth as a man, would you have accepted Him as your Savior? Would you believe?

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

John 9:1-12 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” Some claimed that he was.

Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”

But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”

10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.

11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”

12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.

“I don’t know,” he said.

Should Christians Drink Alcohol?

Is it wrong for Christians to drink alcohol? Over the years, I’ve found that many Christians have mixed views about drinking. The Apostle Paul warns us not to get drunk with wine in the book of Ephesians:

Ephesians 5:17-18

17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,

At a wedding at Cana in Galilee, Jesus and his Apostles attended. When they ran out of wine, Jesus miraculously turned water into wine:

John 2:3-9

When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”…Nearby stood six stone water jars…Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

I wonder why Christians have such conflicting views about drinking? Many Christians consider having a glass of wine, or a beer, to be a sin – yet, some Christians drink wine during communion, and Jesus may have served his Apostles wine during the last supper – the fruit of the vine:

Matthew 26:28-29

28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Also, the Bible advises drinking wine to help with stomach problems and illnesses:

1 Timothy 5:23

23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

I do believe it’s wrong to get drunk, and, if you’re prone to alcohol addiction, then, you should not drink at all. But, I’ve heard some ask – how much is too much? How does one measure how much to drink?

So, what’s your opinion? Is it wrong for Christians to drink alcohol? I’d be interested in hearing the responses to this thought-provoking question. Leave a comment!

Unicorns In The Bible?

Do you believe UNICORNS, the one-horned mythical creatures, really existed?

The word UNICORN was mentioned in the Old King James Version of the Bible. I’ve listed the scriptures at the end of this blog post. From my research, the word that was translated into UNICORN was re’em (the Hebrew word). Re’em means aurochs, which is the ancestor of domestic cattle.

It appears that the word was mistranslated in the Old King James Version. Other versions of the Bible use the word wild ox instead of unicorn.

What do you think? Is it possible that unicorns really existed after all? Do you think these wild, mythical creatures really roved on this earth?

And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.

Sunday Brunch! Have You Ever Seen An Angel?

***Have you ever seen an angel?

Luke 1:18-20

New King James Version (NKJV)

18 And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

19 And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. 20 But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”

Have you ever seen an angel? If you were to ever see an angel, would you believe your eyes? Would you listen? Would you think that you were dreaming?

The angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias, telling him that his prayers had been answered and that his barren wife, Elizabeth, would give birth to a great son, John The Baptist. Zacharias did not initially believe Gabriel’s words, so, he was struck mute until shortly after the birth of his son.

Zacharias learned his lesson on the day he saw Gabriel in the temple – always believe an angel’s words.

How would you react if you were to see an angel? Have you ever seen an angel? Would you believe the angel’s message?

I’ve never seen an angel, but, I’ve often imagined what it would be like to see one of these heavenly creatures. From what I can recall from reading my Bible, angels are usually big, wingless, male-looking beings. Can you imagine, being alone in a room and then you see an angel? Honestly? I think I’d have a heart attack, or, think that I’m dreaming!

Please share your thoughts on this amazing subject!

Sunday Brunch! Behemoth!

http://ceceliadowdy.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/waffles.jpg

Could you imagine seeing a behemoth – a creature whose bones are like tubes of bronze?

When I read Job 40:15-24 (see the entire verse at the end of this post), I’m amazed…amazed just knowing that God created an animal so huge, vast, just thinking about it makes me fearful. When God mentioned the behemoth (and the leviathan) in the book of Job, He did so to explain His greatness to Job. Job realized that God was so vivid and vast that He could not possibly understand His greatness.

I wonder what it would’ve been like to actually see a behemoth? I’d imagine the behemoth and the leviathan existed during the dinosaur age? Wouldn’t it be weird if we could actually see these creatures today? What would it be like to be in a remote, uncharted woods and then you see this massive creature roaming around? I’d be scared, and then, I’d run as fast as I could, praying for the Lord to protect me!

When I read about these creatures, they seem unreal, almost mythical. Just seeing the descriptions of these animals makes me stop, think, and be reminded about God’s greatness. I think reading about these creatures makes me stop and imagine what they’re like, because they are creatures that we no longer see on this earth – at least I’ve never seen them!

I wonder what would happen if such a creature were found today? Could you imagine what it would be like to see it?

Job 40: 15-24

15 “Look at Behemoth,
which I made along with you
and which feeds on grass like an ox.
16 What strength it has in its loins,
what power in the muscles of its belly!
17 Its tail sways like a cedar;
the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.
18 Its bones are tubes of bronze,
its limbs like rods of iron.
19 It ranks first among the works of God,
yet its Maker can approach it with his sword.
20 The hills bring it their produce,
and all the wild animals play nearby.
21 Under the lotus plants it lies,
hidden among the reeds in the marsh.
22 The lotuses conceal it in their shadow;
the poplars by the stream surround it.
23 A raging river does not alarm it;
it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth.
24 Can anyone capture it by the eyes,
or trap it and pierce its nose?

Sunday Brunch! – Job’s Faith!

If you were Job, could you have kept your faith in God?

Job 2:9 His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”

Job suffered. The Lord allowed Satan to have free reign on Job, allowing him to cause Job’s distress, as long as he didn’t kill Job. Job suffered:

1. He lost all of his livestock. (oxen, donkeys, sheep, and camels)

2. Most of his servants were killed

3. All of his children were killed. (Seven sons and three daughters)

4. His entire body became afflicted with painful sores!

Job’s wife told him, “Curse God and die!”

Job’s close friends paid him a visit, spouting words about why Job was suffering. Their words did not make Job feel better about his plight, nor did their words really explain why Job was suffering. Job didn’t understand his great suffering, but, not once did he turn his back against God, although, he did wish to speak to God, to ask God why he was suffering so greatly. When God finally appeared, he reminded Job about His greatness, and Job seemed satisfied with his visit from God, understanding that he cannot question or understand God’s greatness.

I’m sure my faith would’ve been strong enough to withstand such monumental suffering! If you’d suffered like Job, and your wife told you to curse God and die, what would you have done? Could you continue to praise God amidst such tumultuous pain?

Sunday Brunch – Why Do Different Races Worship Separately?

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Do you worship at a mixed-race church, or, is your church predominantly one race?

Whenever I read the above-quoted scripture, I think about how we worship. Why do you think African-Americans and Whites worship separately? Are we presently separated  in the church by race because African-Americans were forced to be separated in the past (through slavery and segregation)?

Or, are we separated because of differing worship styles? I realize some separation in the church is obviously due to do differed religious beliefs. However, in this blog post, I’m focusing on racial separation within the church.

I’ve worshiped in different race environments. As a child, the Kingdom Hall where I worshiped had mixed races. After I broke away from that faith, as an adult, I began worshiping at an AME church (African-American Episcopal). Currently, my family and I worship at a mixed race Baptist church. However, I don’t consider myself a Baptist or an AME, I consider myself a CHRISTIAN.

So, is your church a mixed-raced church, or, are the members predominantly one race? What was the racial makeup of churches where you worshiped in the past!
