The Blacksmith’s Bride<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m still writing The Blacksmith’s Bride<\/a> – a historical novel set a few years after the Civil War. The Blacksmith’s Bride is the third book in the Romance Bride Series<\/a>. I’m still researching while I write my novel. Did you know that the African American elite hosted balls and other formal events before and after the Civil War?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These events were modeled after white formal events. A ball in 1867 for Black Americans might include men who were dressed in formal attire such as waistcoats, cravats and they might even carry walking sticks. Women would wear silk or taffeta gowns. A famous speaker, such as Frederick Douglass, might also attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A formal meal might be served which may have included roasted meats, oysters, biscuits, cakes and expensive wine. A live band would have provided the music. Attendees may have taken part in formal dances, such as a waltz. The venue would have been decorated with chandeliers, candles and other beautiful elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I imagine such an event may have looked like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I mentioned last week, I’m having fun learning new things as I write The Blacksmith’s Bride<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
