Hi Cecilia – Writer’s block – arghh! I was really struggling to stay focussed yesterday working on a technical writing piece that was really dry. I just couldn’t get going and tried all the usual – writing about nothing in particular, taking the dog for a walk, reading something unrelated to what I was doing. Finally I plopped my laptop on the dining room table which is at a pub table kind of height and I wrote standing up for about 4 hours. Not sure it will work for everyone, but I found being able to rock from side to side and not wanting to stand there doing absolutely nothing seemed to work.
    Good luck!

Though I do not recall suffering from writer’s block, with so many other things going on, I have been having trouble motivating myself to make use of those short gaps of time between one thing and the next, preferring to delay until I have several hours at my disposal. Last week I did a detailed outline of my current work in progress, a story about a school teacher who goes out of his way to care for his wife after she left him for other men. Now that I know how it is going to come together, I am much more excited about it. The scenes are playing out in my head and I can’t wait to write them.

Hi, Cecelia. I’m not as far along the journey as you are, but I have an idea:

Imagine the world from your toddler’s point of view.

Pretend to be 2 or 3 yrs old for 15 minutes or more. You’re bound to get some ideas. 🙂

I, like Nedra, am not as far on the journey as you Cecilia either but I love her suggestion. Having a 3 1/2 year old myself I like to say that fatherhood is fertile ground for many a writing opportunity.

The other thing I have heard so many writers say is that to stave off any writing lapses is to simply WRITE, anything, even if it is unrelated to your present work, and do it for at least 15 minutes per day. My favorite is poetry and anytime I sit down to write, whether I am stuck or not, that seems to come rather fluidly.

    Hope that helps.
