The Help

Have you read this novel, if so, did you like it?

I’ve started reading the secular novel entitled The Help. From what I understand, this novel has been extremely popular for lots of people. The book is about a group of African-American maids in the sixties and their relationships with their white employers. The author is Caucasian. What’s interesting is that this novel has a cover with three birds on it – you don’t even get a glimpse as to what the novel’s about from glancing at the cover.

However, they have done a new cover that depicts what the story is about. I think it’s interesting that this book is not shelved in the African-American section of the bookstore. I guess that makes sense since the author is Caucasian. If you’ve been reading this blog long enough, you’ve seen my views about shelving African American books separately from the other books. Also, wanted to add that this book is being made into a movie that’s about to be released pretty soon.

I’ll be sure to post a full review once I’m done. So again, my question is, have you read this novel, if so, did you like it?

Yes, I’ve heard plenty of buzz about the novel. It appears to be a good story. No its should not be in the african american section of bookstores as the very reason you mentioned. I like how FAST hollywood jumped on this novel to make it a movie. have you seen the new cover and what do you think the birds represent and I wonder why the decision to change the cover.

@Joy, I’m enjoying it so far.

@Sidne, Not sure what the birds represent. I think they changed the cover so that they can better depict what the story is about. I think the did the birds, instead of the recent cover, because they didn’t want the readers mistakenly thinking that it was an African-American book. I think they were worried about sales. Now that the “cat is out of the bag” and everybody’s raving about the book and the soon-to-be released movie, they can now have a cover with African-americans on it.

That’s just my opinion – not a fact!!

I heard how wonderful the book is long before I knew what it was about. I bought it but haven’t read it yet. I will definitely see the movie. And I suspect you’re right, Cecelia, about the cover.

Hope things are going well with you.

@Julie J. – I’ll check out your review once I’m done reading the book.

@Jess – you should place the book at the top of your TBR pile.

I should be finished reading the book within the next day or so. Hopefully, I’ll be posting my review sometime between Saturday-Friday.
