Do you believe UNICORNS, the one-horned mythical creatures, really existed?
The word UNICORN was mentioned in the Old King James Version of the Bible. I’ve listed the scriptures at the end of this blog post. From my research, the word that was translated into UNICORN was re’em (the Hebrew word). Re’em means aurochs, which is the ancestor of domestic cattle.
It appears that the word was mistranslated in the Old King James Version. Other versions of the Bible use the word wild ox instead of unicorn.
What do you think? Is it possible that unicorns really existed after all? Do you think these wild, mythical creatures really roved on this earth?

Oddly enough, my first published story was a Christian fantasy that involved a genetically-created anthropomorphic unicorn (The Substance of Things Hoped For), but I never believed that unicorns ever existed even though the translators for the King James Bible did.
The Biblical unicorn is a wild ox, nothing more ….
But that doesn’t stop me from dreaming.
Thanks for commenting, Alan! It’s an exciting thought – existing unicorns. I highly doubt they existed, though. Like you said, I believe it was just a wild ox or some other similar type of animal!
This is a fascinating subject! I’ve always wondered about unicorns, but if dinosaurs existed, why not unicorns? The big fish existed that swallowed Jonah. All things are possible with God; maybe there was a reason for unicorns at one time. I’d love to read more about this subject.
Hey, Sally!
Yes, the big fish that swallowed Jonah – I’d always thought it was a whale, but, the Bible doesn’t call this big fish a whale! Further, a whale is not in the fish family, it’s a mammal! You bring up a good point! I’ll need to research the big fish in Jonah, to see if there are any other pending details about it! Thanks for bringing that up! Yes, all things possible through God!
Actually, I do believe there is a possibility of
many things in this world, that have or do exist!
With all of the knowledge that humans have, there is
still so much, we don’t know…
Thanks, Cindi
@Cindi – You are so right! There are so many things that we DON’T know! That’s a good point for all of us to remember! I’m glad that you commented!
I know that tiny horses existed, not sure about unicorns but you never know! I remember reading about a unicorn when I was a child and loving the story. In fact, I have a white porclean unicorn that I received as a gift from my husband.
@Carol – tiny horses? How tiny? Care to share details? I love hearing about these strange and unusual creatures. Your comment is food for thought! I also recall reading about unicorns in fairy tales as a child – I’d always thought they were mythical creatures. Like, I’d always thought that dragons were mythical, and, although the Bible does not mention dragons, per se, the Bible mentions the Leviathan in the book of Job. The Leviathan, this large sea creature, shares many characteristics with a dragon, it even breathes smoke and fire!
This is a first for me I’ve never noticed it before in the Bible. I’ve always subscribed to the believe that legions or folklore are based in part on a truth, now what that truth might be in this case I’m not sure but it is possible.
Hi, Theresa.
You probably never noticed it in the Bible because the word UNICORN was only in the King James Version. It may have been a mistranslation, but, what if it isn’t? Pretty interesting and thought-provoking!
NO, I believe it was just wild ox.
I have never really thought about unicorns until you asked. I don’t believe they actually existed and I too believe the bible refers to a wild ox. Nice, thought-provoking question.
@Theresa – thanks for commenting!
I did actually do a little research on this a while back for a short story, and although I don’t think anyone can know for certain, the most likely conclusion I came to was that something called a unicorn did exist, but not the kind of romanticised animal we think about nowadays when someone says unicorn – something maybe related to an ox, with a single horn, something strong and probably ferocious.
@Alex – I wonder when the romanticized version became the “trademark” for the unicorn? I’ll have to look that up! Thanks for commenting!
