Ted Dekker’s Outlaw Tour

Have you ever met and had your picture taken with a famous author? If so, who?

I attended Ted Dekker’s Outlaw Tour last night in Washington D.C. It kinda reminded me of a church service – a church service where you have a guest speaker giving the sermon. He talked about growing up in Indonesia among cannibals when he was a child. He also talked about the violent games he played with other children. He then mentioned going to boarding school, being separated from the rest of his family. He then mentioned how your physical appearance is not the real you. Our bodies are nothing more than costumes and we’re all spiritual beings and Christ lives in all of us. It’s something that we seem to forget because we’re blinded by…stuff.

We seem to measure our worth by how much money we make, what others think about our clothes, how many pounds we lose/how much we weigh, etc. Nothing wrong with doing this, but, we need to remember that Christ is a part of all of us.

He quoted some scriptures, one was John 17:20-26

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

As he gave the message, he showed a few videos.

Afterwards, he signed books and you could take pictures with Ted. His assistant, Kevin Kaiser,  took the pictures. I hesitated about taking the pic – I’m not much of a picture taker. But, minutes before my turn, I decided to have my pic taken with him and I had my copy of Outlaw signed.

I saw others chatting with Ted when they got their books signed, but, I honestly didn’t have anything to say. I was hungry, ready to leave and get my dinner and go home. The line was kinda long so I had to wait some time to get my book signed. When I came forward, I handed Ted my book to sign, he said. “Cecelia.” Pause. I guess since I remained silent, he said, “Is this the first book of mine that you’ve gotten?”

I said with a smile, “No, I’ve read several of your books.”

He signed it, and then his assistant said, “Let’s take the picture. Get real close.” We posed, I got my picture taken, and that was it! 🙂

So, have you ever met and had your picture taken with a famous author? If so, who?

Showdown By Ted Dekker

Showdown by Ted Dekker

Welcome to Paradise.

Epic battles of good and evil are happening all around us.

Today that battle comes to town with the sound of lone footsteps clacking down the blacktop on a hot, lazy summer afternoon. The black-cloaked man arrives in the sleepy town of Paradise and manages to become the talk of the town within the hour. Bearing the power to grant any unfulfilled dream, he is irresistible.

Seems like bliss . . . but is it?
Or is hell about to break loose in Paradise?

***This review has a few minor spoilers.

I decided to take a break from my normal reading material to read this Ted Dekker book that’s been sitting on my shelf for awhile. I purchased it from the discount rack at Booksamillion awhile ago.

Paradise is a small, sleepy, boring town…until the new preacher, Marsuvees Black, arrives. Once Black enscounces himself within the town, he puts the entire Paradise population under his spell, with the exception of a young boy named Johnny. Johnny has witnessed Black murdering another citizen, and he can see the true colors of Black’s haunted personality. Johnny is scared, and he wants to save Paradise from Black, whom he considers a devil-like creature.

Wait a second. Do you like inspiring books? You must read Southern Comfort. It’s a haunting faith-filled tale. Tell your friends and church buddies by sharing this link. Download today! On Kindle & KU! Now, back to Showdown.

Meanwhile, up in the hills, a monastery is performing an experiment: Project Showdown. If the monks and teachers can keep a group of orphans separated from society and evil, will those children only be destined for goodness once they are released into the world, therefore becoming citizens of strong faith which could be an advantage to the rest of mankind? These orphans are not supposed to go into the dungeons, but Billy, one of the orphans, decides to break that rule after he comes under Black’s influence. As other orphans follow Billy’s footsteps, you’re drawn into a story where child writers are mesmerized by worms, worm sludge, and fictional characters. Samuel, another orphan, finds himself in the unique position of trying to sway his peers to go against evil to attempt to find their way back to the way of goodness and light.

This story did draw me in, and I thought it had a phenomenal Christian message. It shows how easily one can be swayed into evil, and while in the Devil’s evil clutches, you’re brainwashed, no longer thinking that things like murder and violence against innocent people are wrong in God’s eyes.

However, some parts of the book were utterly gross. When the kids are in the dungeon, and their flesh is destroyed by an evil rash with sores, they use worm sludge to treat their afflicted skin. Huge worms haunt the dungeon, multiplying while providing sludge treatments for the children. When the children eat the sludge…just gross is all.

Great violence and harm comes to one of the monastery’s children. It was hard for me to read about this…it just was. Although the story comes together at the end, this part will probably be hard to get through if you’re a sensitive reader.

If you like a good read with lots of supernatural elements, then this book is for you.

==
This book gave me nightmares. No, I’m not kidding. It was chilling, gruesome and bloody.

HOWEVER, I wanted to keep reading the story. I wanted to see what happened to Wendy, Colt, Pinkus, Nicole, and Carey. I also wanted to find out the identity of the killer named Red.

Five people are drawn together, being influenced by an evil killer named Red. Red is obsessed with ugliness…The five people are forced to decide which one of them is the ugliest…therefore deciding which one of them will die next. Red gives the five ultimatums throughout the book.

This isn’t the usual genre that I read, and in order for me to tell you my full thoughts about the story, I’ll have to give spoilers. If you want a chilling story that’ll keep you reading, this book is for you. But, if you’re somewhat squeamish, I wouldn’t recommend this novel. See below for my further thoughts….

SPOILER BELOW

I read this novel very quickly. I’ve been reading it the last few nights before going to bed. The book somehow crept into my mind and stayed there…I had bad dreams for two nights. My husband told me to stop reading the book, but I told him that the book was written in a way that made me want to finish.

Wait a second…

If you like religious, wholesome fiction, then read my novel Shades of Chocolate! Over 150 Amazon 5-star reviews! Join my email list and receive fantastic updates about new releases! Now, back to Skin…

This book was filled with so much darkness, sadness and evil…I felt that Dekker could have placed more light into the story…more goodness. It may have been in the story…hidden…and I just didn’t “see” it. I caught a glimpse of truth and goodness at the end, but that’s about it.

I wanted to rewrite the novel and take out some of the blood and gore! Chopped-off fingers, chopped-off hand, hanging deaths, shooting deaths, beautiful face disfigured with a knife, beautiful face disfigured with a blow torch…death, death, death….It was like the streets were swimming with blood…and I just wanted to say, “Stop, enough already!”

It was a bit of a relief to find out that the town was not real and the whole thing was a game. I’m not the most scientifically-minded person, but I found the ending a little bit confusing. Even though it was a game, the events physically affected the players…sometimes. For example, Pinkus’s fingers were severed during the game, but, when they came out of the game, his fingers were intact. Yet, brother and sister Nicole and Carey both died during the game and they were really dead when the game was over. [SEE MY ADDITIONAL INSIGHT BELOW. I THOUGHT OF SOMETHING ELSE ON 11/23/09.]

When the killer is revealed, it’s definitely a shock.

I won’t rant that I didn’t see much of an inspirational message since I’ve heard that this was marketed as a secular book. If I could rewrite this story, I’d place some light into it. [SEE MY ADDITIONAL INSIGHT BELOW. I THOUGHT OF SOMETHING ELSE ON 11/23/09.] Show them praying, calling out to Jesus. It didn’t appear that any of the characters were Christians. I know Carey dealt with the occult, using his pentagram and candles and stuff.

I think this book will stay in my mind for a long time. I didn’t purchase this title. After I read Three and Black, my sister heard me raving about how much I enjoyed Dekker’s work. She found this book in the discount bin at Barnes and Noble and called me, wanting to know if I wanted it. I told her to purchase it for me and she did. I haven’t read all of his books because his genre is not my usual preference, but, his genre (at least the older books) are something I can read and enjoy occasionally.

Parts of this novel reminded me of the following three movies:

It (Stephen King wrote the book. I can’t read King, either. I tried to read a King novel when I was in my early twenties and I didn’t make it past chapter one. The novel was well-written, but, he gave me nightmares, so I stopped reading and never tried again.)
Jumangi – Just Google it to find out what this movie’s about. Not sure if I spelled it right. Robin Williams starred in it and he was swept into a board game as a child, but returns from the game once he’s an adult.
The Matrix

As time goes by, and if the mood permits, I’ll probably read some more of Dekker’s older stuff within the next year or so, like the rest of the Circle series. If he has other titles as gruesome as this one, I don’t think I’ll read them.

***Additional thoughts…this book is still heavy on my mind and I just wish it would go away! I did come up with a thought on the inspirational aspect of this story this evening (11/23/09). Carey was involved with the occult and I’m assuming his sister Nicole was, too, therefore making them evil/bad as far as God is concerned. The killer, Red, is also evil, for obvious reasons. All three of these people end up dead while the good people, Wendy, Colt, and Pinkus, manage to live throughout the game. The “goodness” of Wendy, Cold, and Pinkus is portrayed by the fact that they are now alive and there was no physical damage – that’s why Pinkus still has his fingers. It’s the goodness protecting him and this protection obviously didn’t cover Nicole, Carey, or the killer? I’m rambling now, not sure if I’m on the right track…but that’s all I have to say about this novel. Now, hopefully it’ll leave my mind, allowing me to focus on something more positive and uplifting!

Question From A Writer

I know I’d said the whole Ted Dekker subject was closed, but wanted to mention literary agent Chip Macgregor’s interesting blog post about the incident. I believe Chip eloquently expressed the views of most of the Love Inspired authors. Also, I forgot to mention in my earlier post, about Love Inspired’s list that Ted was talking about…I’d forgotten all about that list until Ted mentioned it. Most inspirational romances have to follow strict rules, and when I’m writing a Christian romance, I barely pay attention to a list. I just kind of know what needs to be done, and if the manuscript needs some changes, the editor will tell me and I’ll change it. So far, it hasn’t been a big deal. Okay, so this subject is now closed…for real this time!

Now, onto a writing question!

Philip wrote to ask the following:

I’m a twice published author, both are inspirational fiction. I enjoyed reading your blog and you seem to be very open and willing to assist others in the writing business. I’m working hard at getting into a larger publisher as mine is only a print on demand and seems to be more like a self-publishing company.
I’m currently working on a supernatural thriller. I would enjoy hearing from you as to if you ever refer other authors to your publishers or agent. I look forward to hearing from you.

Philip, I wish I could help you with a referral, but I can’t! I write Christian romance novels, and the publishers that I deal with don’t publish supernatural thrillers. It’s difficult for me to give you advice without knowing what steps you’ve taken to find a publisher. Since you say you are working hard at finding a publisher, then I’m assuming you’ve been submitting your work to commercial publishers? Read this post, and in addition to that advice, I wanted to mention the importance of researching a publisher before submitting to them. You need to know the market – which publishers currently publish works that are similiar to yours? Go to a bookstore or go to Amazon and see if you can find titles similiar to yours. Once you’ve targeted some publishers, then you can go to their website and find their submission guidelines. Chances are, nowadays, you’ll need an agent to submit to them.

I can’t refer you to an agent because I don’t have one. As I mentioned in this post, I’m searching for an agent now. I’ve sold five Christian romances, and all of them I was able to sell without an agent. I suggest, after you do your homework in researching publishers, that you attend a writers conference. You might want to make sure your targeted publishing house will be attending the writers’ conference that you choose. Meet with an editor from your targeted publishing house at the conference. Usually, most writers’ conferences have a limited amount of one-on-one appointments. I landed my first two book deals as a result of attending writers’ conferences.

Philip left me a link for his website! Stop by and check out his novels! I think the covers are very tastefully done…very striking!

I hope my suggestions helped! If you have any more questions, feel free to send them to me!

Ted Dekker And Love Inspired

Ted Dekker ticked me off a bit. I know Love Inspired’s guidelines may seem as if they’re unrealistic, but, they’re writing for their readership, plus, people pick up a Love Inspired novel expecting a certain standard. This post makes me angry because I don’t think Ted’s ever read a Love Inspired! He’s putting down the whole line, and that simply stinks! Read a Love Inspired, Ted, and do some investigating and look at the Love Inspired sales figures!

Black By Ted Dekker

Paperback
ISBN: 1595540210
Pub. Date: February 2005
Book Description

Enter an adrenaline-laced epic where dreams and reality collide.

Fleeing his assailants through deserted alleyways, Thomas Hunter narrowly escapes to the roof of a building. Then a silent bullet from the night clips his head…and his world goes black.

From the blackness comes an amazing reality of another world-a world where evil is contained. A world where Thomas Hunter is in love with a beautiful woman. Then he remembers the dream of the chase as he reaches to touch the blood on his head.

Where does the dream end and reality begin? Every time he falls asleep in one world, he awakes in the other-both facing catastrophic disaster. Thomas is being pushed beyond his limits…even beyond the limits of space and time.

Black is an incredible story of evil and rescue, betrayal and love, pursuit and death, and a terrorist’s threat unlike anything the human race has ever known.

Some say the world hangs in the balance of every choice we make. Now the fate of two worlds hangs in the balance of one man’s choice.

==============
This book was very strongly written. As a novelist, I can see that it took Dekker a lot of time and effort to create an alternate world where Thomas Hunter traveled through his dreams. The ‘other’ fantastical world where he travels when he ‘dreams’ kind of reminds me of the paradise that God promises us in the New Testament. It also reminded me of the Garden of Eden in the Old Testament. I noticed in this other place that they did not eat meat (that I can recall). They would eat different fruits and the fruits had healing powers.

POSSIBLE SPOILER BELOW:

Also, in this other place, Tom is ‘chosen’ by Rachelle. She wants him to woo her and win her over so that she can be his woman. This is not soemthing that Tom particularly wants to pursue initially, but he does get into the Great Romance as time goes on, and he figures out what needs to be done to win Rachelle over. I sense The Great Romance is symbolic of something else? Since fantasy and sci-fi is not my usual genre, I don’t always get all of the points that are being made. I’m not a deep reader, so sometimes I might miss something if it’s sci-fi/fantasy.

When Tanis is tempted by Teelah with the fruit and he eats it, and then the black bats attack the perfect-like world, well, that was obviously like the serpent tempting Adam in the Old Testament.

The ending left me stunned, though. I guess it was written that way so that you would automatically read the next book in the installment. I would highly recommend this book to all who want a good sci-fi/fantasy read.

Skin By Ted Dekker

No, I haven’t read this book. I don’t even own this book (although I’ll probably get around to either buying it or checking it out of the library and reading it.)

I just thought it was interesting that I saw this book in the fiction/literature section in the Books A Million bookstore in Beltway Plaza in the College Park/Greenbelt area in Maryland. I thought they would have placed this book in the Christian fiction section.

The only reason I’m blogging about this is because I think it’s awesome that his book was in the regular fiction section. Somebody who wouldn’t necessarily pick up a Christian fiction title might give this one a try simply because of where they have it shelved. They might not necessarily know it’s a Christian title until they start reading it.

House By Ted Dekker And Frank Peretti

=========MAJOR SPOILER BELOW. DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO READ THE BOOK!!!===

Okay, I’ve read books written solo by both Dekker and and Peretti, and enjoyed them. Both men are two of my favorite Christian fiction novelists. However, House was a different than the books that both Dekker and Peretti wrote solo.

Stephanie and Jack are a married couple who are going to a marriage counseling session at Jack’s suggestion. Stephanie does not want to go, but she does agree to go to pacify Jack. Stephanie is a country singer and she tries to hide the pain from their failed marriage by singing songs and doing ‘concerts’ at clubs. Jack is a writer and he desperately wants to save his marriage to Stephanie.

En route to their session, they get lost and are stopped by a cop, Officer Lawdale. He is intimidating, but tries to get them back on their way. While they continue, their tires are slashed on purpose by some weird contraption in the road. They go to the only building around, an abandoned inn. Since they are so far away, their cell phone service does not work.

When they arrive at the inn, there are no innkeepers present, initially. They only find Randy, a boisterous business man who thinks he’s a know-it-all, and his companion, Leslie, a psychologist. Randy always tries to act like he’s brave, although he’s really quivering with fear. Leslie always tries to analyze people and their predicaments due to her psychotic background. Both Randy and Leslie have suffered the same accident as Jack and Stephanie: the tires of their car were slashed.

Soon, they are joined by Betty, Stewart, and Pete, the family of ‘innkeepers’ who later are revealed as demons. As the book moves forward, it becomes apparant that the house is possessed by demons and the leader, the one who initiates the ‘game’ where he will let them out of the house if they give him one dead body, is Barsiduous White, who wears a tin mask and locks the house against their escape. As they ‘play’ this ‘game’ it becomes apparant that Betty, Stewart, and Pete are working with White in this ‘game’.

Around the middle of the book Stephanie, Randy, Leslie, and Jack go through several cliffhangers to try and escape the house. As they find themselves in the basement, the house shifts several times, and when they think they’re escaping, they end up in the same place where they’d started minutes ago. The time shifts also, making minutes seem like hours.

The game is supposed to end at dawn and as they go through rooms with trick mirrors and flooded pipes, they find another victim locked in the basement, Susan. Susan is a young innocent girl who claims she knows the way out of the house. However, at first, all fail to listen to this girl and it becomes apparant at the end that she’s an angel who’s come to show them the power of God is greater than the power of the demons who have them trapped in the house.

Only Stephanie and Jack end up accepting the truth at the end, so they are able to escape this weird house due to their newfound acceptance of Jesus Christ. Randy ends up killing Leslie, buying into White’s ‘rule’ that one dead body will guarantee an exit from the demented house.

During the course of the story, the demons play mind games with the players. When the players are alone, in locked rooms, their minds are tricked into remembering hurtful episodes from their past, things they need to let go of in order to accept God’s grace.

There are several things that the demons do during the course of the story to keep the reader hooked. Barsiduous White comes around the corner, sporting his tin mask and perhaps carrying a gun. Sometimes, the four players are tricked when they see four exact ‘twins’ of themselves, and the four originals wonder which are real and which are fake.

A room floods, and Randy tries to kill Stewart by trapping him in a pipe, trying to drown him. Leslie is trapped in a room with Pete, who wants her as his ‘wife’. He bounds her, and throws darts at her until she verbally admits to being ‘guilty.’ Pete also traps Stephanie later on, wanting her for his ‘wife.’

Stephanie feels abandoned when Jack leaves her in a closet as he goes to try and rescue Leslie. Jack is forced through an open door with a huge forceful current, and the door shuts behind him and he can’t get out. Throughout the story, doors open and close of their own accord. The house moans and groans throughout the story also. There are also trick mirrors in some of the rooms, where you see everything reflected in the mirror, except yourself.

And the list goes on and on.
I didn’t enjoy this book at all. I doubt I’ll read another Dekker-Peretti collaboration. I just wanted the book to end.

Thr3e And Other Things

Well, I got a LOT of responses about the novel, Thr3e. I also discovered that this book will be made into a movie for Fox Faith. It’s due to come out January 2007. Here is the link if you’re interested in finding out more information.:

http://foxfaithmovies.com/

I’ll try to remember to watch the movie and perhaps do a discussion on my blog, comparing the movie to the book and see which one people liked better.

I’ve started reading Leave It To Claire by Tracey Bateman. It’s a chick lit book told in the first person. So far it’s interesting, and I want to finish it to see what happens to Claire. I will post about this book when I’m finished with it.

As far as my own writing is concerned, I’m focused on getting the first draft done of one of my novels. I plan on pitching it when I attend the annual American Christian Fiction Writers conference in Dallas. I leave on Thursday and return on Sunday. I’ll be sure to do a day to day blog about my experiences at the conference.

Thr3e By Ted Dekker

THREE by TED DEKKER PODCAST
This blog post is sponsored by Divine Desserts Publishing, LLC. Come check out our Christian fiction titles at ceceliadowdy.com/books. The link is at the end of this blog post.

Okay, I’ll admit it. I finished this story the day before yesterday, and I
can’t get it off of my mind. If anybody has read this book, will they
please post comments to this blog? I want to discuss this book with
somebody so bad that it aches. You know what I mean? I wish I was still
in a book club and this was the pick of the month!

MAJOR SPOILER! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

This book had a surprise ending, an ending that I’m still trying to
grasp and make sense of. Kevin, a divinity school student has suddenly
been plagued by disturbing phone calls by a man named Slater. Slater
asks a riddle, giving Kevin an amount of time to respond. If he doesn’t
respond, Slater retaliates by setting off a bomb. Slater accomplishes
his bomb threats in the book, and when the FBI gets involved, things get
pretty heated since Slater does not want cops involved with his “game”
with Kevin.

Jennifer, an FBI agent, is attracted to Kevin. She finds his childlike
curiosity, and his quiet nature to be appealing.

As Jennifer works on the case, she encourages Kevin to try and uncover the
real identity of Slater. Slater says he’ll stop his threats if Kevin
will confess his sin. Kevin assumes Slater is a boy he knew many years
ago, whom he’d left in an abandoned building to die. Kevin assumes
Slater is back to get revenge on him since he tried to “kill” him by
leaving him in the building with no means of escape. Kevin did this act
only to save his best and only friend Samantha(Sam). Sam also comes to
Kevin’s rescue when he contacts her, telling of how his car exploded.

Sam and Kevin have deep feelings for one another, but they never
pursued a relationship because they don’t want to mess up their
friendship by having a romance.

After many twists and turns, threats by Slater, and probing by Jennifer
and Samantha, it’s discovered, over a four-day period of time(and a
little over four hundred pages) that Kevin, Slater, and Samantha are all
one person! Kevin has multiple personalities and he assumes that Slater
and Samantha are people he’s known from his past, but they actually
don’t exist.

I keep thinking about this book because I’m trying to piece together
how plausible it was to have such extended scenes and conversations
between Sam and Kevin and Kevin and Slater. It’s hard for me to picture
this, however, I guess, once the truth has been revealed, the reader
would just need to assume that all of the details of the events happened in
Kevin’s head. I know this type of mental disorder does indeed exist, and it’s hard for me to imagine seeing people, having conversations with them for extended periods of time, and they’re really not there. I guess it’s kind of like when you are dreaming, it seems real, but you wake up and know it’s a dream. With this type of mental disorder, I’d think it would be like you were dreaming, except it happens when you are awake, and you are not aware that the people you are talking to are not real?

This story reminded me of a Sidney Sheldon title I read years ago
called Tell Me Your Dreams. In Sheldon’s book it was a woman who was the main character, and she had two other personalities. There is a string of murders involved in this book. It’s hard for me to remember all of the details of this book clearly since I read it several years ago.

If anybody reading this has read Thr3e, feel free to post your comments.
